Becoming More Like God

I heard a conversation on the radio this weekend that really sparked my interest.  I wish I could quote it, but I was driving by myself and could only listen.  Then I started to really think about it.  So all of my thoughts are mixed in with the real conversation and thus this is not a quote, but an interpretation of how my brain processed the information.

The man was talking about how we can become more like God.  He talked about how we begin to act like the people with whom we spend most of our time.  I have heard this often in reference to peer pressure, but never really thought about it in association with being more like God.

The point is this:  we learn ABOUT God by reading the Bible and praying.  We become LIKE Him by spending TIME with Him; by resting in His presence and letting all of His goodness “rub off on us.”

This has opened up a whole new line of thinking for me.  When I learn more ABOUT God, I want to KNOW Him more.  When I spend time with Him, I become more like Him.

So reading my Bible teaches me more ABOUT God.  Going to church and listening to sermons and teachers, adds to my knowledge about His character, His will, His plan for my life.  Praying draws me closer in a more personal way.  I acknowledge my need and stand in awe of His holiness.  But resting, listening and surrendering changes me.  Being in His presence changes me!

I want to be more like Him.  The answer is to rest in Him, spend time WITH Him.

It is going to take me awhile to process the simplicity of this and how great it has impacted my vision…

The information is not new, but my perspective has been deepened.  This may be a journey of its own!
